When Judy Greene, of Salamanca, N.Y., approached her 40th year, she faced a simple question. "What does it mean to be a Native American?"

Born in Buffalo, N.Y., of a Mohawk father and a Seneca mother, she grew up in western Pennsylvania and attended undergraduate school in Miami, Fla. Although as a child she'd visited relatives on the Allegany Reservation in upstate New York, she had little first hand knowledge of her people.
