A leading manufacturer of breathable membranes for roofing applications in Europe, Dorken GmbH, Herdecke, Germany, joined the nonwovens industry at the end of 2001 to strengthen its position in the roofing market. "Dorken's decision to join the nonwovens industry is not a typical situation," explained Jan Mielke, sales manager of the company's nonwovens business unit. "We have invested more than $17.5 million in a polyester and polypropylene spunbonding line in an effort to become more independent from other suppliers through the production of our end products. Also, it was an important step to strengthen our position as a leading European manufacturer for waterproofing membranes for roofing applications."
