LAKEWOOD RANCH -- Fossils, fish scales and broken shells spit haphazardly from the Gulf of Mexico are coveted treasures for shell artists like Fran Schlusemann.
She and other shell enthusiasts combed beaches and shops to create works to display and sell at the Sarasota Shell Club's 40th annual festival.
Schlusemann, a shell art teacher and Lakewood Ranch resident, began taking annual three-week vacations to Anna Maria Island with her husband, Hank, in 1955. So many thousands of shells lined the sandy beaches they had to wear shoes to walk along the water's edge.
