Most of the year, Quartzsite is a sleepy little western Arizona town with 3,500 residents. But pull off Interstate 10 during one of the eight major gem and mineral shows held in January and February, and it's a far different story.
Half a million people may show up then, says La Paz County community development director Brad Weekley. Quartzsite is a haven for northern snowbirds, rock enthusiasts, and tourists, many of whom nest in recreational vehicles (RVs) for days or weeks at a time during the winter.
