The Dutch cigar industry last year produced 2.241bn cigars, 1.944bn of which it sold outside the Netherlands, mainly to other EU countries, according to the Dutch Cigar Manufacturers' Association. Production has been rising steadily in recent years from 1.889bn in 1997 to 2.015bn in 1998, 2.195bn in 1999 and 2.215bn in 2000.
Last year's production level was the highest for at least 10 years, though it is worth noting that demand, and therefore production, is now driven by cigarillos rather than by the larger cigars of some years ago.
