Rudyard Kipling once said, "And a woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke." Kipling's words were spoken perhaps at the height of the popularity of the cigar.
It is not generally known that cigar smoking is a creation of the Caribbean, specifically Cuba, and for much of a century Florida, including Punta Gorda, played a significant role in the cigar industry.
While Europeans transferred much of their culture to the Western Hemisphere, the cigar originated in the Caribbean, and the habit was transported to Europe. It was found by early explorers in Cuba and Yucatan.
