Gunmen open fire on the motorcade of Pres. Saparmurad Niyazov, 62, in what appeared to be an assassination attempt. Niyazov escaped unharmed from the attack, which occurred after two cars and a truck blocked the president's motorcade in Ashkhabad. Niyazov was at the wheel of his car, as is his wont. (The attempted assassination reveals a rare crack in Niyazov's near-absolute control over the country, suggesting that an undercurrent of opposition exists in a society where the government has cultivated a cult of personality around Niyazov, known as Akbar Turkmenbashi, the Great Leader of all Turkmen).
