Niyazov escaped unharmed from the attack, which occurred after two cars and a truck blocked the president's motorcade in Ashkhabad. Niyazov was at the wheel of his car, as is his wont. (The attempted assassination reveals a rare crack in Niyazov's near-absolute control over the country, suggesting that an undercurrent of opposition exists in a society where the government has cultivated a cult of personality around Niyazov, known as Akbar Turkmenbashi, the Great Leader of all Turkmen).
