Turkmenistan's energy base has shrunk from almost 17 million t/y of oil equivalent in 1989 to 14m t/yoe. It is rich in energy resources and has a population of about 4.9ymillion in a territory roughly the size of Spain. The landlocked country has the third or fourth biggest reserves of gas in the world and huge but largely untapped oil resources. It still imports small amounts of coal to meet its local needs. It exports gas and refined oil products.
