THERE WAS A LOT OF SUBTRACTing going on in the division. Toronto couldn't afford Curtis Joseph, so he took a better offer and headed to Detroit The Bruins weren't able to lock up Bill Guerin and the local kid took more money and more stability in the Lone Star State. Buffalo even dealt Slava Kozlov to Atlanta for a draft pick to cut costs. Ottawa didn't lose much except for Shawn McEachern, but the Senators didn't add anything, either. The only club to make a legitimate improvement was Montreal and it was minimal compared to many of the teams around the league.
