Q. My neighbor had beautiful hydrangeas this year. When I complimented her on them she volunteered to give me some cuttings. I thought she would have to dig up the plant and divide it. Do you have any suggestions on what to do?

A. Making cuttings of hydrangeas is very easy and you will not make a noticeable change in the appearance of your neighbor's plant. Unfortunately, fall is not the time to do this because you need to use the new growth stage, or softwood, for cuttings.
