Turkmenistan has been the second largest gas producing country in the former Soviet Union, having once produced 83.9 BCM/year. Estimates of its proven reserves of natural gas range between 100-155 TCF, plus 250-300 TCF in place said to be probable. The government says its proven recoverable reserves are 3 TCM, and that the total with probable and possible reserves comes to almost 10 TCM. The government's plan is for natural gas production to reach 85 BCM/year in 2005 and 120 BCM/year in 2010. Under this plan, exports are to reach 70 BCM/year by 2005 and 100 BCM/year by 2010.
