TurkmenGaz, the state company in charge of gas production and processing, announced in 2000 that it was to have liquefaction plants built at some of the large gas fields to produce LNG for export. The LNG will be carried by rail and China is to be the main market. The LNG exports to China will be under an agreement signed in Ashgabat in May 2000 during the visit there of then Chinese President Jiang Zemin.
