Title: Tanzania fire-cured provides good living: when examining worldwide leaf production and trade, it is natural to concentrate on flue-cured and Burley, which dominate such activities, but sometimes it is enlightening to look at some of the other tobacco crops that are grown around the world and that, over the years, have provided a good, reliable income for generations of growers and their families.(World Leaf)

Fire-cured has been grown by small-scale tobacco producers in the Songea region of south-west Tanzania for more than 70 years. The soils there are ideal for tobacco and rainfall is plentiful.

Tobacco is essentially the only cash crop in the area, though coffee plantations are found in hilly areas within 200 km of the town of Songea.

During the early days of tobacco production the leaf was sold locally, mainly for consumption in a very strong cigarette known as Ten Cents, which was the retail price of a pack of 20 at that time. It was manufactured in Dares Salaam by the East African Tobacco Co, part of the British American Tobacco group.
