The Food and Drug Administration has begun a crackdown on companies that manufacture, market, and distribute products containing androstenedione, commonly known as "andro."
The first step the FDA took was to send warning letters to 23 companies asking them to cease distributing the products, and threatening enforcement actions such as seizures and injunctions if they fail to do so.
"We took this action because FDA has concluded that there is inadequate information to establish that these products marketed as dietary supplements would reasonably be expected to be safe," Dr. Susan Walker said in a press briefing sponsored by the FDA.
