Most patients with type 2 diabetes should be taking moderate doses of statins regardless of their LDL-cholesterol levels, according to a new clinical practice guideline from the American College of Physicians.
Unlike recommendations of other groups such as the American Diabetes Association and the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), ACP's strictly evidence-based document does not provide baseline LDL-cholesterol levels for starting therapy or therapeutic target values (Ann Intern, Med. 140[8]:644-49, 2004).
