For weeks, the Magic was prepared to take the path of least resistance. When the team won the draft lottery in May, the assumption was Connecticut forward Emeka Okafor would be the No. 1 pick. Okafor would be teamed with star guard TracT McGrady, whose public dissatisfaction, the team figured, was a ploy to get the Magic to improve the talent on the roster quickly.
