More research is needed to develop new contraceptive methods that also protect against sexually transmitted infections, the Institute of Medicine said in a report.
The report, "New Frontiers in Contraceptive Research: A Blueprint for Action," recommends setting basic research targets, calling for behavioral research at an early stage of development, expanding public-private partnerships for contraceptive development, and increasing collaboration with developing countries.
"There are clear bottlenecks in the process of contraceptive development," said Dr. Jerome Strauss III, chair of the IOM committee.
