It's a familiar theme across California: Big-box retailers like Wal-Mart must plead their case at the polls.

Yet voters aren't necessarily impressed by the promises of jobs and millions of dollars to enhance public services.

Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart's April 6 rejection by voters in the Los Angeles suburb of Inglewood is the latest loss for mega-retail outlets. It follows on the heels of the March 2 ballot measure in North County where voters denied a proposal for a second Wal-Mart in San Marcos.
