The Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival is one of the oldest in Europe; its fifty-second edition was held in those German cities in late November, 2003. This is an unusual event since it has always been, according to director Michael Kotz, a "festival of newcomers from all across the world." Festival publicity highlights the world-class filmmakers initially "discovered" in previous editions--Jarmusch, Fassbinder, Wenders, Varda, Kieslowski, and many more. The twenty-three works in this year's Official Competition represented in most cases the first or second feature made by a director. All the competing filmmakers are currently considered to be little known on the international scene; this, according to Kotz, was the primary consideration for eligibility.
