When one hears the name Omar Sharif, one automatically recalls the larger-than-life characters that a young Egyptian actor managed to immortalize and render universally appealing to generations of viewers worldwide. Born Michael Shalhoub in Alexandria in 1932, Sharif majored in math and physics at Cairo's Victory College and worked in his father's lumber company before pursuing an acting career. He made his film debut in 1953 in Siraa Fil-Wadi (The Blazing Sun), directed by renowned Egyptian auteur Youssef Chahine, costarring with the popular Egyptian actress (and his future wife) Faten Hamama.
