Whale Rider producer John Barnett was "surprised and gratified" to learn star Keisha Castle-Hughes (pictured) had been nominated for a best actress Oscar.
"I'm very pleasantly surprised," he told On from Chicago. "The competition's very tough ... but it's a wonderful endorsement of her in particular. We never thought this would happen."
That's because distributor Newmarket Films' Oscar campaign asked members of the Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences to consider the 13-year-old for best supporting actress.
