They said, "Expect the unexpected," and if you bought their promises and were prepared to be surprised, well, they got it pretty much right after all.
Host Billy Crystal made a welcome return, as expected, in his eighth time playing host to the Academy Awards, and the predicted winners won, at least early on, as the "Lord of the Rings" landslide got rolling.
So, unlike the Oscars, let's cut any additional preamble and get right to the night's honors.
