Duane Proell's reaction caught University of Minnesota professor Edward L. Cussler off guard. When Cussler approached the school's aquatics center director in the summer of 2003 and asked to fill a 25-yard university pool with a gooey substance, Proell was surprisingly enthusiastic.
"The initial thought that came to me is, yes, we want to do this," said Proell, who has been in the aquatics industry for nearly 30 years. "Anytime an aquatics facility at a major university can be involved in a research study, you have to take that chance and be part of the [school's] educational opportunities."
