Many organizations thought they had finished dealing with HIPAA compliance when they met the deadlines for the Privacy Rule and the transaction and code sets in 2003. They had spent a great deal of time writing policies and procedures, training staff, and issuing notices of privacy practices to consumers and families. Yet there's still more to do--namely, meeting the upcoming deadline for compliance with the HIPAA Security Rule. The security standards are essentially the "other half" of protecting the confidentiality of health information that is stored electronically.
