Classical Theory of Electromagnetism: Second Edition (with Companion Solution Manual) - Book Review,
by Baldassare Di Bartolo

From Book News, Inc. Di Bartolo (Boston College) takes a didactic approach to his selection of topics and gives specific examples in this new treatment of electromagnetism aimed at advanced students in physics and electrical engineering. He starts with the mathematics of electromagnetism, including vector notation, fields, the vector differential operator, and Gauss's Theorem. He then describes charges, electrostatics, stationary currents and magnetostatics. He proceeds to induction and quasi-stationary phenomena and Maxwell equations, followed by two sections on the theory of relativity. He then examines radiation, including that from a moving point charge and from a periodic charge and current distributions, radiation damping and electromagnetic mass. He describes Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of electrodynamics, and closes with the electromagnetic properties of matter. He includes a solutions manual for all chapters. Updates to edition include changing from the MKS to the SI unit system.Copyright © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
Book Description The topics treated in this book are essentially those that a graduate student of physics or electrical engineering should be familiar with in classical electromagnetism. Each topic is analyzed in detail, and each new concept is explained with examples. The text is self-contained and oriented toward the student. It is concise and yet very detailed in mathematical calculations; the equations are explicitly derived, which is of great help to students and allows them to concentrate more on the physics concepts, rather than spending too much time on mathematical derivations. The introduction of the theory of special relativity is always a challenge in teaching electromagnetism, and this topic is considered with particular care. The value of the book is increased by the inclusion of a large number of exercises.
