Sweet & Sour Singapore - Book Review,
by Jenny Gay

Book Description Sweet and Sour Singapore is a satchel of little sketches of the faces of Singapore. In it you will meet the self-made business tycoon who 'smiles carefully' because money - and face - is thicker than blood; the graduate sophisticate whose only remorse in stealing another woman's husband is that 'that stupid woman' had to set fire to herself and her children; the secretary who by day is a frigid unit of labor and by night turns an alluring hostess. Sweet and Sour Singapore sparkles with gentle humor, irony and wit. Jenyy Gay's characters sruggle towards that elusive meeting of the souls as old clashes with new, as East meets West, and as hypocrisy masquerades as tradition.
About the Author Jenny Gay is English but has lived and worked in Singapore since 1972. She is not only no stranger to life in Singapore but is in fact intimately familiar with the Chinese community, having married a Chinese Singaporean whom she met while at university in England. After she graduated with an honors degree in English, French and Philosophy and armed with additional qualifications in Social Work, she came to Singapore with her husband and began teaching at Dover Court Preparatory School where she became Deputy Head in charge of the Middle School Section. Taking a break in 1979, she left for the United Kingdom to obtain a teaching qualification and returned to Singapore in 1982 to resume teaching, simultaneously earning a Master's degree in Education. Eventually, she rose to become the High School Principal at ISS International School and was with the school until 1990 when she resigned. At present she is Principal of Overseas Family School in Paterson Road. Jenny is now a Singapore permanent resident.
