This useful reference presents a wealth of statistics on the ethno-demography of Vietnam, focusing primarily on the last few decades. It analyzes the ethnic composition of the population, identifying each of the fifty-four ethnic groups and sub-groups by name, geographical distribution, and linguistic origin. Geographic distribution statistics are provided for each ethnic group, showing the process of migration and redistribution. SYNOPSIS
Originally published in Vietnamese (Hanoi Social Sciences Publishing House, 1995), Dien's (Institute of Ethnology, Hanoi) is the first English text about ethno-demography in Vietnam. Focusing on the last few decades, the analysis is based on population censuses, annual statistics from central and local government offices, and data from ethnological and ethno-sociological field visits, and is directed toward policy makers and managers formulating policy and planning for ethnic minorities and the population of Vietnam as a whole.
