New Trends in the History and Philosophy of Mathematics - Book Review,
by Tinne Hoff Kjeldsen (Editor)

From Book News, Inc. Seven papers and an introductory essay represent a 1998 conference at the U. of Roskilde in Denmark held to aid crossfertilization among mathematicians, historians of mathematics, and philosophers. So it's no surprise that the papers range from densely mathematical discussions of the nature and role of mathematical proof and the relationship between mathematics and physics, to philosophically oriented treatises on the ontology of proof, to a discussion of mathematical ideas in African history (ethnomathematics as a new research field). The work is not indexed, and it would have benefitted from some rigorous proofreading. Distributed in the US by ISBS.Copyright © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
