Can You Spot the Leopard?: African Masks
- Book Review,
by Christine Stelzig

From School Library Journal
Gr 3-6--A visually exciting art book that looks at over 30 masks from a variety of African peoples. Most of the examples are shown individually on a double-page spread, but a few are clustered together. The masks are attributed to a specific group, either within the text or in the detailed picture credits. A map on the inside back cover shows the location of the groups in modern Africa. The full-color photographs reveal the complexity of the masks along with their vitality and power. The text consists of a mixture of speculation and folklore to discuss the representation of various animals and the significance of decorative elements. It also offers comments on the carving and construction of the masks and their uses. The discussions of their ceremonial uses and spiritual power are respectful and dignified, if occasionally awkward in tone. Overall, though, this is an appealing and interesting introduction to this particular art form.Jean Pollock, King Country Library System, Seattle, Copyright 1998 Cahners Business Information, Inc.
