Two introductory essays trace the development of Italian art glass within the context of European glassmaking as a whole and examine the intimate world of glass manufacturing on Murano, with its unique combination of tradition and innovation. The superb color plates reproduce work by all the major designers and manufacturers. Italian art glass is not synonymous with Murano, however, and a notable feature of the book is the marvelous work produced in Milan by Erwin Burger and the firm Fontana Arte.

Kunstmuseum Dsseldorf im Ehrenhof, Glasmuseum Hentrich, and
traveling to venues around the world during 1997 and 1998. Two
introductory essays trace the development of Italian art glass. The
catalogue comprises full-page color plates with detailed information
on the technique and manufacturing history of each piece. The work
produced on the Venetian island of Murano has governed most people's
image of Italian glassmaking; but a notable feature of this book (and
the exhibition) is the spotlight on work produced in Milan by Erwin
Burger and the firm Fontana Arte. Detailed notes on the history of
the manufacturers and on the designers, a list of important
exhibitions, reproductions of the most common signatures, and an
extensive bibliography contribute to the reference value of the
