Nonlinear Optics in Telecommunications - Book Review,
by Thomas Schneider

Book Description This book is dedicated to Nonlinear Effects in optical Telecommunications Systems. It gives a comprehensive overview of each Effect from a physical point of view and discusses its implications for the Capacity of transmission Systems with practical estimations and partly with Experiments. Nonlinear Effects are not only responsible for a reduction of the Capacity of Lightwave Systems but are able, to some extent, to satisfy the ever increasing bandwidth demand of Applications like the Internet and Video Telephones. Because they can, in principle, overcome the limitations of electrical signal processing in today?s optical networks. If they are used in the right manner nonliner effects give the possibility to exploit the bandwidth of optical systems close to the physical limit. Therefore special Chapters are dealing with Applications of nonlinear Effects for Signal Processing, ultrafast optical switching, wavelength conversion, Nonlinear Amplification and Optical Phaseconjugation. In order to allow a fast overview and a self studying of the subject, the book is organised in a didactical manner with a Summary and Problems at the end of each Chapter.
