The SQUID Handbook : Volume 1: Fundamentals and Technology of SQUIDs and SQUID Systems
- Book Review,
by John Clarke, Alex I. Braginski

From Book News, Inc.
In this first volume of the two-volume handbook, Clarke (physics, U. of California, Berkeley), Braginski (physics emeritus, Research Center Julich and the U. of Wuppertal) and contributors describe the theory, fabrication, electronics, and system issues of Superconducting Quantum Inference Devices (SQUIDs) and practical DC and RF SQUIDs. They begin with a broad phenomenological introduction with a bit of history, proceed to the theoretical foundations of DC and RF SQUIDs, techniques and materials in fabrication, analog and digital electronics, and the practicalities of DC and RF SQUIDs and system issues such as cryogenics and cabling.Copyright © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Description
This two-volume handbook offers a comprehensive and coordinated presentation of SQUIDs (Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices), including device fundamentals, design, technology, system construction and multiple applications. It thus bridges the gap between fundamentals and applications, and will be a valuable textbook reference for graduates and for professionals engaged in SQUID research and engineering. It will equally be of use to specialists in multiple fields of practical SQUID applications, from human brain research and heart diagnostics, via airplane and nuclear plant testing to prospecting for oil, minerals and buried ordnance.
The first volume presents the theory of SQUIDs, their fabrication from low- and high-temperature superconductors, the necessary readout electronics, and the design and performance of practical direct current and radio-frequency SQUIDs. It concludes with an overview of the most important SQUID system issues. In addition, an appendix summarizes the foundations of superconductivity that are necessary to understand SQUIDs, while a glossary and tables of units and constants are also included.
The second volume is devoted to applications.

The Squid Handbook: Fundamentals and Technology, Vol. 1

FROM THE PUBLISHER

"This two-volume handbook offers a comprehensive, coordinated presentation of Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs), including their fundamentals, design, technology, system issues and applications. The handbook bridges the gap between fundamentals and applications, and will be a valuable textbook reference for graduate students and professionals engaged in SQUID research and engineering as well as to specialists in fields in which SQUIDs are used, including fundamental science, detection of signals from the brain and heart for both clinical and research purposes, nondestructive evaluation of metal structures and semiconductor packaging, detection of nuclear magnetic resonance, and prospecting for oil and minerals." "John Clarke has been a faculty member of the Physics Department at the University of California, Berkeley, and a faculty senior scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory." Alex Braginski is retired Director of the Institute of Thin Film and Ion Technology at the Research Center Julich, and APL Professor of Physics at the University of Wuppertal, both in Germany.
