FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
One of six titles in the "Baby Animals" series, this text takes young readers through the life of a young elephants from birth to young "childhood." With no introduction to speak of, the book moves right into two page sections that feature a short paragraph or two of information about some aspect of the elephant's life with a large picture on the right side of the page illustrating that particular topic. For example, the "new member" section details how quickly young elephants are brought into the herd and how the herd responds by moving at the slower speed of the new arrival. The related picture shows the herd moving around the young elephant. Other sections feature the importance of food and water, physiological aspects of the elephant body and their necessity for survival and communication, and how young elephants learn and play. As with other books in the series, young readers will enjoy the pictures found within each section. The family group, bathtime, and growing up are also featured, with the culminating section focusing on elephant facts. While this is a good, basic text, it lacks many of the features that I have come to expect in non-fiction picture books: there is no listing of websites or related resources for readers interested in learning more, and no glossary of words to support independent reading. Nevertheless, the illustrations are solid and do support the text well. This is a series that will provide a basic introduction for young readers. 2005, Stargazer Books, Ages 5 to 8.
