Tony Hawk FROM THE PUBLISHER
Tony Hawk had a list of tricks he wanted to do with his skateboard -- an ollie 540, a kickflip 540, a varial 720. At the top of his list was the 900. By 1999, Tony had done them all -- except the 900. To do a 900 a skater has to fly up a ramp at top speed, then spin two and half times in the air and land back on the board again. No skater had ever done it. Tony Hawk had been trying for over a decade.
Then came the Summer 1999 X Games. Tony Hawk decided to give the fans something to remember. He decided to shoot for the 900. On his 12th try, Tony took off down the ramp, up and back down, then up again, his body rolling into a ball, twisting, spinning, 1 -- 2 -- 3, then making the landing, his board on the bottom. It was unbelievable. He had done it! The first 900 in history!
The crowd went wild. It was an unbelievable moment, but just one of many in Tony Hawk's career on the skateboard. Read all about them in this story of the man who revolutionized skateboarding. Includes a glossary of skateboard terms and moves, a photo section, and a factsheet for quick reference.
