It seems that fear either cripples us or impels us to resource everything we know and then stretch beyond even that to unexplored areas – areas that, once visited, seem hauntingly familiar. After a nine-year fear-induced hiatus from flying, I once again discovered the value of going into the dark. Some of my most meaningful spiritual experiences have since occurred, appropriately enough, high above the earth’s busyness, just on the other side of fear. Track 2: Soothing Meditation for Boarding & Waiting for Take-Off – Calming Pre-Flight Nerves for a Relaxing Trip [With a background of relaxing music designed to facilitate an enjoyable experience] As you are preparing to board, appreciate that an invention such as this plane exists that can so quickly take you to your desired destination. How lucky we are to have this convenience. This perspective is not only the truth but it will help reframe your thinking about flying. Focus your attention now on your breath as you let your shoulders drop and relax. Take a complete breath – first exhaling all the air out of your lungs...and then inhaling slowly, filling your lungs from bottom to top. Stretch and fill your lungs to their maximum capacity – they love to stretch just as your muscles do. Keep your shoulders dropped as you hold the inhalation as long as you can... Then only when you cannot hold the inhalation any longer, exhale slowly to the count of 8... Notice any release throughout your body as you now let your breath settle in to a soothing rhythm of its own. Enjoy the calming effect of observing your breath...in...and out...you may even enjoy a sense of merging with your breath, becoming one with it...in...and out...inhaling and exhaling... Good. Whenever you get pulled out of yourself, distracted by what is going on around you or by fearful thoughts, simply remember to keep returning to your inner world of calm. Continue to let the breath be your soothing center point as you bring your attention to your face muscles. Where do you feel the most tension right now in your face? Let’s focus on that area, circle that area as specifically as you can...Good...and then give it permission to release. Just soften and let go of the tension, the resistance, in this area...and release a little more...Excellent. Enjoy that release as you continue to breathe. In...and out...Now let the other muscles of your face release – feel your forehead smoooothing out...The corners of your eyes relaxing... Even as you carry on the activities of boarding, finding your seat and so forth, stay inwardly attuned to your steady, calming breath and the ongoing release in your face. Now bring your attention to your jaw joint muscles. Study this area, searching for any tightness, and when you find it, however intense or subtle, let go of trying to control it...and relax…even more...challenge yourself to find new ways to release just 10% more...Good...And now let that release spread down both cheeks, letting any tension drop right off...and continue relaxing through your mouth area...the corners of your mouth... Lips... Tongue...and Chin... Keep your primary focus right here, not getting pulled out by external activities. Enjoy whatever relaxation you feel in your whole face right now. Now, let’s do a tension inventory. Is there any remaining tension in your face? Remember, we’re looking for uncomfortable sensations – we are no longer afraid of these sensations – we want to find them because we know exactly what to do with them. We simply get out of the way - and let every ounce of resistance in your face simply dissolve... Now let’s expand this relaxation, this pleasure by allowing the rolling waves of release to flow down your entire body… gently but powerfully carrying away any fear in your body and mind. Feel the tranquility flow through your neck and shoulders and down through your arms even as you are boarding the plane and getting settled... Now feel this river of repose wash gently through your torso and down your spine... Doesn’t it feel peaceful to have your own special inner spa, your own private retreat going on amid the routine boarding activities? Allow yourself to experience the smooth waves of serenity now rolling down into your legs and right through your feet, carrying away any remnant of tension and fear – right out through your toes...leaving you with clear, clean energy flowing from head to toe. Let this flow become a continuous wavelike movement of energy undulating throughout your body. Enjoy this... Notice that there is no room for static energy, fear energy. That energy is effortlessly and continuously swept away by the momentum of the calming waves. Should any tension arise you now know that it’s not a cause for concern – all you need to do is soften your resistance and let the waves wash it away. Treasure this quiet inner experience.
