Since ancient days (and nights), the belief that a man can transform physically into a beast has proven one of the most potent and perennial of supernatural fears. It is a teror that has haunted centuries of people, from soldiers of early Rome, to Gypsies of the Balkans, to the farmers of China - where, on nights of the full moon, peasants of some remote valleys are said still to keep vigil for were-cats, were-tigers, and even were-crocodiles. The most infamous of the man-to-beast creatures, of course, is the LOUP-GAROU, or Lycanthrope. Its roots can be traced to Sociology (the wolf being the most feared predator of medieval Europe). Sexuality (the "liberated" carnal apetites of the wolf fascinating to the religious peasants), Literature (as described in such works as Bram Stoker's 1897 Dracula) - and even to History as well. As early as 1932, Universal had announced a vehicle for Boris Karloff entitled The Wolf Man. It sat on the production shelf as the Monster of Frankenstein enjoyed new triumphs in The Old Dark House, The Mummy and The Black Cat.
