Eastern European Nationalism in the Twentieth Century
- Book Review,
by Peter F. Sugar (Editor)

From Book News, Inc.
A volume written by country specialists for those who would like to know why the people of Eastern Europe behave as they do since the end of communist rule, and why nationalism has replaced communism as the major force dictating their behavior. The chapters include selected documents as well as essays. The nationalisms (rather than countries) specifically considered are the Albanian, Bulgarian, Czech and Slovak, Greek, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, and Yugoslavian. These national chapters are framed by an introduction and a conclusion (Nationalism, the Victorious Ideology). Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.

Book Description
The role of the three major "isms" of the twentieth century (Fascism, Communism and Nationalism) and their importance in the history of nine Eastern European countries (Albania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the former Yugoslavia) is covered. Each chapter analyzes nationalism in a given country based on translations of four selected documents over four time periods: 1900-1914, 1918-1939, the Communist period, and the recent post-Communist era. The last chapter draws a general, theoretical picture of the role of nationalism in twentieth century Eastern Europe.

About the Author
