History of Inequality in South Africa 1652-2002 - Book Reviews,
by Sampie Terreblanche
History of Inequality in South Africa 1652-2002 SYNOPSIS Although discussing the unequal distribution of income, opportunities, and property that is the usual focus of studies on inequality, Terreblanche (emeritus, economics, U. of Stellenbosch, South Africa) is primarily concerned with unequal distribution of political, social, and economic power embedded in South African society during the "extended colonialism" of 1652 to 1994 and beyond. He identifies six distinct "systemic periods" in South African political economy, with all but the final one being extremely unequal, uneven, and unjust. The latest period, one of democratic capitalism, is criticized for having a strongly institutionalized capitalist part and a weak and underdeveloped democratic component.
