Booknews

Dziga Vertov, whose 1929 documentary depicts a day in the life of a Soviet city, has been classed by some film historians with the European modernist avant-garde. Roberts, however, sees him as a filmmaker committed to a political position as well as to a rigorously thought-out documentary practice. Roberts (Leeds U.) argues that is an affirmation of the Stalinist policies about to unfold: to "crush resistance in the countryside, urbanize, industrialize, purge opposition." His analysis includes a close textual reading of the film, a deconstruction of its architecture, and an exploration of the film's (and Vertov's) reputation in the following decades. No subject index. Distributed by Palgrave. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
