The Ardennes Offensive: Us III & XII Corps : Southern Sector (Order of Battle Series, 13)
- Book Review,
by Bruce Quarrie

Book Description
On 16 December 1944 the German Army launched an attack through the Ardennes region of Belgium, aimed at splitting the Allied armies in two. General George Patton's response to the German breakthrough was, 'Hell, let's have the guts to let the sons of bitches go all the way to Paris. Then we'll really cut 'em up.' At a meeting on 19 December Eisenhower asked Patton how quickly he could counterattack. Confidently he answered; 'On 22 December with three divisions.' On 22 December 4 Armored Division began the drive to Bastogne. This title provides a highly detailed unit by unit breakdown of the Allied forces in the southern sector of the 'bulge'. With Patton's counterattack, the scene was set for a classic showdown: this title guides the reader in full detail through the clashes that followed.

Ardennes Offensive: U. S. III and XII Corps-Southern Front

FROM THE PUBLISHER

The task of securing the southern shoulder of Hitler's great offensive in the Ardennes fell to the VII Armee commanded by the dogged but unimaginative General Erich Brandenberger. His men fought a series of bitter battles attempting to protect the vulnerable flank of the attack. In the ultimate irony of the battle he was pitted against one of the most daring and aggressive Allied commanders-General George S. Patton-as US Third Army drove into the southern flank of the 'Bulge.' Desperate fighting took place as Brandenberger's men attempted to prevent Patton's forces linking up with the beleaguered garrison of Bastogne.
