This book follows the same general pattern of the "Cultures of the World" series with well-organized chapters on major topics such as geography, history, lifestyle, economy, government, and so on. It is a thoughtful, even-handed addition to a library on the Middle East/North Africa region because it pays full attention to Qadhafi's ascension to power and leadership at age 27. His stated goals were unity among Arabs, a Libyan socialist republic based on Islamic law, and the destruction of Israel. Qadhafi is acknowledged as an important leader for Libya, who tried to steer a course for Libya between Western-style democracy and Marxist communism, but his dubious international choices, such as support for global terrorism and "revolutionaries" in other African countries is also included. The authors note that Qadhafi made Libya the richest African country within seven years of taking power, but also they discuss his decision to make the largest man-made river in the world in order to irrigate his country — a decision that is costly and probably not feasible. Furthermore, the complex discussion of the economy acknowledges that US (1982) and UN (1992) embargoes coupled with rapid population growth and the decision to hinder small business have set Libya on a downward economic path. This fascinating treatment of a country which is finding its way on to the world stage could include more textual references for information such as the list of categories under Shari'ah law and more discussion of the internal and international conflicts which Libya faces, such as the decision to support Islamic socialism. Interesting info boxes on palm trees and camels, showing connections to traditionallifestyles, Sanusi leaders and movements will keep student interest high.
