An introduction to the geography, history, and culture of Pakistan.
FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Debbie Bohn
In this title, Pakistan is seen through the eyes of Tunweer Shah, an eight-year-old Pakistani. Tunweer lives with his parents and his brother and sister on a small farm. They do not have a lot of furniture and the only electrical equipment they own is a radio. Tunweer's father keeps cows and goats and everyone in the family helps take care of the animals. Tunweer's responsibilities include feeding the goats and chopping up their food for them. Tunweer goes to an all-boys school that does not have desks or chairs so they sit on the floor. It will be interesting for children to compare their life to Tunweer's life. The book contains maps and pictures that help the reader relate to Tunweer and to the culture in Pakistan. It also briefly explains the religion, holidays, languages and the main industries in Pakistan. The glossary and further information sections will encourage children to find out more about Pakistan. This is a very useful book for educators as they try to bring Pakistan alive for their students. 2004, Cherrytree Books, Ages 9 to 12.
