FROM THE CRITICS

Library Journal

Each of these books is aimed at giving both amateur and professional designers an understanding of the elements that characterize the particular decorative style. Quinn, coeditor of Merge magazine and editor of Fashion Theory, explains Chinese history, domestic architecture, lifestyles, and festivals, as well as the traditional furniture, textiles, and decorative details that define Chinese decor. Color photographs depict how these elements can be incorporated into contemporary interiors. Luscombe-Whyte and Bradbury (coauthors, Designers' Houses) show the interiors of existing Moroccan homes and palaces in colonial, traditional, modern, and country styles, with descriptions of how decorative designs and architecture have been influenced by Morocco's history. Black (The Japanese House) describes how the vernacular use of wood, stone, earth, and water in Tuscan residential design and interiors adds to the appeal of this region of Italy. The ideas are illustrated with beautiful color photographs. Morocco and Chinese Style are recommended for large and academic interior design collections, and libraries should purchase Tuscan Elements if there is a continued interest in this popular decorating style.
