Elephants FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Part of the large-format "QEB Animal Lives" series from the UK, this title introduces young animal lovers to the world of pachyderms of both Africa and Asia. As with each series entry, it starts with a look at related species, their habitats (shown on a small world map), and patterns of growth and survival, ending with conservation measures and a pictorial chart of the animal's life cycle. Illustrations are large color photographs, well-chosen for visual appeal and featured details. In this title, the closeups of a trunk's texture and the chomping mouth underneath are especially effective. Each spread has a bold, large-print heading and goes on to present clear, accurate text that appears to be up-to-datefor example, it includes the African forest elephant, recognized as a species only since 2000. Middle readers will enjoy the "Elephant Facts" appearing in green disks on each page and will be fascinated to learn that a newborn baby can weigh up to 250 pounds and that elephants communicate with 160 different signals. Younger elephant fans can enjoy browsing through the appealing photos, while more advanced readers will find this attractive and informative book easy to read by themselves or with a friend. A glossary and an index are included. 2004, QEB, Ages 5 to 10.
