Monkeys

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Cherie Ilg Haas

Most children have a pretty good idea of what a monkey looks like, but many will be intrigued by the diverse appearances of the monkeys in this book. Color photographs show images of a soft, blond pygmy marmoset, an emperor monkey, which wears a dramatic mustache that is bigger than its face, and the alien-looking red uakari, which has the furry body of an orangutan, but a bright red, bald head. Other images are just as striking. The text is large and easy to read, and briefly covers subjects such as primates, troops, and protection against predators. There is also a section on the importance of providing safety for monkeys, which are losing their habitats and/or being poached. This book also explains that there are basically two types of monkeys: old world and new world, and it describes the differences between them. A short glossary contains words such as groom and savanna, and there is an index. This title is part of the "Buddy Books Animal Kingdom" series. 2005, ABDO Publishing Company, Ages 5 to 8.
