         Editorial Review

Nepal
- Book Review,
by Kate A. Conley

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4--This slim series title features pages of uncluttered text with full-color photo inserts, occasionally full page. Two-page chapters address "The Kingdom of Nepal," "A Nation of Farmers," "Land of Festivals," and more. The basic text will assist beginning or reluctant readers. Features and sidebars offer "Fast Facts," a brief time line, a recipe for a national dish, and a few words in Nepali. Unfortunately, much of the information provided is so oversimplified, vague, or misleading that it will give readers an inaccurate understanding of the country and culture. For example, there is no mention that the climate varies drastically by region. In addition, there are some obvious omissions. For example, comments about dress don't mention lungi or the topi, both ubiquitous items. For a basic, more accurate look at this nation, Connie Bickman's Nepal (ABDO, 1996) is the better choice.--Be Astengo, Alachua County Library, Gainesville, FL Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
