Afghanistan
- Book Review,

From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up-A thorough introduction to the history, religion, and culture of Afghanistan. The information is current, including a discussion of the Taliban and its repressive practices, as well as life in this country since the regime was ousted. The text explains how its geography has strongly influenced the country's development and its people, and also how many invaders have attempted to conquer this territory. Similar in coverage to Jeffrey Gritzner's Afghanistan (Chelsea, 2002), Corona's title is more in-depth, but is not as attractive. It lacks a good map and offers only black-and-white illustrations, compared to the color photographs in Gritzner's title.Marion F. Gallivan, Gannon University, Erie, PACopyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Reviewed with William Goodwin's Pakistan .Gr. 6-12. The Modern Nations of the World series continues with these two entries. As usual, the authors provide well-selected details and generally balanced treatment, looking at both the strengths and hardships affecting these countries that are so much in the news and so misunderstood. The authors work to dispel misconceptions about the day-to-day life, providing information on both packed cities and barren rural areas. In Afghanistan, the emphasis is on military activity, including a little about Osama bin Laden and the Taliban. There is also information on education, women, geography, history, religion, art, and culture. Pakistan concentrates mostly on the country's struggle for independence, with separate biographical sections on political and social leaders and their efforts to empower their country in ways previous leaders could not. Each book includes a "facts" section that encapsulates major information about each country, a chronology, and a list of further readings. Roger Leslie
