FROM THE CRITICS
Library Journal
A contributing editor to House Beautiful magazine, Pittel provides the accompanying text to this colorful collection of photographs of pools designed by a number of internationally recognized architects, designers, and landscapers. This title has a distinct international flavor as it includes pools located in St. Tropez, Athens, Marrakech, California, Florida, and Manhattan. In this case, the term pool is defined rather broadly; selections range from somewhat traditional swimming pools to ponds to formal landscape features. Most are beautiful with lush vegetation and plush accommodations, but several are stark "neo-Stalinist" affairs of plain concrete (these hold little appeal even to someone just coming out of a tough Ohio winter!). Although this is primarily a photo book, Pittel's text provides detailed information about each site and its design. Like its subject, this title is an attractive luxury and can be passed up by all but the most comprehensive collections. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
