House Beautiful Pools

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Among the world's most spectacular indoor and outdoor interpretations, these residential lap pools, ponds, whirlpools, and spas are the creations of international architects, designers, and landscapers such as William Turnbull, Jr., Hugh Newell Jacobsen, Jacques Wirtz, and Steven Ehrlich. Plunge into pools that dreams are made of, where serene oases shimmer in sophisticated gardens, angular sculptures jut out over precipitous ledges, and enticing reflecting ponds nestle in flower beds. Ingenious landscaping techniques--dramatic waterfalls, manmade lakes and lagoons, and exotic plants that bloom year-round--turn the poolside area into a paradise. Likewise, patios, decks, surrounds, and cabanas are divine for entertaining. From tropical showcases bordered by junglelike foliage to a spare, minimalist spa set in concrete, every design explodes conventional ideas. So dip into the pictures and advice, then enjoy your own perfect pool!

FROM THE CRITICS

Library Journal

A contributing editor to House Beautiful magazine, Pittel provides the accompanying text to this colorful collection of photographs of pools designed by a number of internationally recognized architects, designers, and landscapers. This title has a distinct international flavor as it includes pools located in St. Tropez, Athens, Marrakech, California, Florida, and Manhattan. In this case, the term pool is defined rather broadly; selections range from somewhat traditional swimming pools to ponds to formal landscape features. Most are beautiful with lush vegetation and plush accommodations, but several are stark "neo-Stalinist" affairs of plain concrete (these hold little appeal even to someone just coming out of a tough Ohio winter!). Although this is primarily a photo book, Pittel's text provides detailed information about each site and its design. Like its subject, this title is an attractive luxury and can be passed up by all but the most comprehensive collections. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
