The Spirit of Pinehurst FROM THE PUBLISHER
In the history of American golf one place reigns supreme. Pinehurst, North Carolina, is considered by many the birthplace of American golf. Every great player has played there, from Harry Vardon to Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer to Tiger Woods. Scotsman Donald Ross, perhaps the most famous name in the world of golf architecture, set up shop in Pinehurst for over 50 years. Richard Tufts, the grandson of Pinehurst founder James W. Tufts, was a giant in golf administration and rules circles for many decades.
Now, in The Spirit of Pinehurst, the memories of all the great golf and good times have been assembled in a fascinating book that tells not only the Pinehurst story, but that of the development of American golf as well. Supplementing Lee Pace's entertaining story are hundreds of vintage and modern-day photographs of golf's most famous resort, its courses, unique architecture, and a cast of celebrity players unparalleled in the history of the game. Pinehurst is a golf Mecca, and The Spirit of Pinehurst takes you there -- touring its many courses, the famous Pinehurst clubhouse, historic inns, and the quaint village of Pinehurst.
It has often been said that golf was born in St. Andrews, but lives in Pinehurst. Dubbed the "Golf Capitol of America," and the "St. Andrews of American Golf," Pinehurst may be described by many titles, yet it stands alone in its unique character. As you read this remarkable book, you will come to understand why there is only one Pinehurst.
