The Arts and Crafts Cabin - Book Review,
by Robbin Obomsawin

Ottawa Citizen, March 1, 2003 "Robbin Obomsawin is the mistress of small, startling homes that blend the beauty of timbers with conventional architecture."
Book Description Take a tour through twenty-five modern log homes reborn in the Arts & Crafts tradition, and witness how Craftsman style combines with the latest in log hybrid architecture to create a totally new and unique genre of building in The Arts & Crafts Cabin. In this new title from log building expert Robbin Obomsawin, the rich Arts & Crafts heritage of the late 1800s that rebelled against mass-produced goods and the opulence of the Victorian era melds beautifully with the ideals of log home design and cabin living, where a simple life and appreciation for fine craftsmanship are held in the highest esteem. This new hybrid style incorporates the exquisite workmanship and sophistication that have become hallmarks of Arts & Crafts design with the warmth and comfort of log elements to create homes inspired by nature, creativity, and simple beauty. With one of the industry's premier photographers, Roger Wade, and the log industry's most prolific and respected author, Robbin Obomsawin, The Arts & Crafts Cabin uses spectacular color photography, floor plans, and compelling historical text to showcase how the principles and philosophy of William Morris, Gustav Stickley, and Charles and Henry Greene combine with modern artistry to create some of the most exciting residential and recreational architecture being created today. Robbin Obomsawin is the construction manager and general contractor for Beaver Creek Log Homes. Robbin has served as vice president of the International Log Builders Association for Handcrafters and is the author of Small Log Homes, Best Log Home Plans, The Not So Log Cabin, and Log Cabin Classics. She lives in New York State.
From the Inside Flap The rich Arts & Crafts heritage created by William Morris, Gustav Stickley, and Charles and Henry Greene is transforming cabin design. Much like the original Arts & Crafts movement in the late 1800s that was a reaction against elaborate and mass-produced machine-made goods, today's log building world is turning away from the kit-manufactured cabin and toward handcrafted designs in the Arts & Crafts spirit to create homes that are inspired by nature and built to last. In her fifth book, author Robbin Obomsawin takes you on a tour of 25 home plans that relate to the natural environment, incorporate porches and windows, and are simple in design but showcase the natural materials from which they are made. These are cabins with open floor plans that encourage family life, a relationship with the ideals of simplicity, utility, and handcraftsmanship and illustrate Gustav Stickley's dream that "a home should give a sense of peace and comfort." The Arts & Crafts Cabin is not just a décor but also a way of life where simplicity in itself can be sensational. Whether you are building a first home, desire a one-of-a-kind weekend retreat, or wish to transform an average home into one of rustic elegance or storybook charm, these pages are filled with helpful designs to punctuate any home's interior and exterior.

Introduction The old form and philosophy of the Arts & Crafts style is the inspiration for classic, timeless design that is making history once more and regaining the prominence and popularity it once enjoyed at the turn of the century. The Arts & Crafts form of design still speaks to us today and continues to influence a new generation of architecture and craftsmen. Arts & Crafts Log Homes was created to share some of the new forms of construction that have become the perfect blend of handcrafted log joinery skills merged with the Arts & Crafts principles and philosophy of the modern-day craftsman. Pure simplicity and natural imperfections of raw logs are beautiful contrasts to other natural or man-made materials. The new hybrid style of Arts & Crafts creates an exterior punctuated by the warmth of log elements where logs breathe life into the home's structure, creating once again, over 100 years later, a new hybrid of Arts & Crafts architectural style that aesthetically blurs the line between indoors and out. The traditional form of a handcrafted log artisan's skill lends itself well to the philosophy of the Craftsman-style home. The massive log columns, combined with beautifully and skillfully crafted round and square-log trusses or a combination of them both, highlight the home's form. The architectural accents of log elements add distinction and permanence to a home's frame. The structure's exterior façade of log elements can easily be mixed with wood shingles, rough-sawn boards, cedar clapboards, stonewalls, stucco walls, or a combination of many of these materials to give the home a depth of textures.
